Sat. January 21, 2006 Discovery Day

Kip Cranna, Musical Administrator of the San Francisco Opera, led a discussion of Dvorak's Stabat Mater. He began with the text of the Stabat Mater, which comes from the late 13th century, then examined settings of the Stabat Mater through history, with examples from Gregorian chant, Pergolesi, Rossini, and Verdi. We then listened to examples of Dvorak's other music, including sections from the New World Symphony, the Humoresque, and his most well-known opera, Rusalka. Finally we listened to and sang much of the Stabat Mater itself, analyzing the structure of the piece as we went along.

Wed. October 5, 2005 Rehearsal

For the first half of the rehearsal, we did a complete run-through of the Borodin and Faure while mixed into groups. For the second half we went through the Galindo, reading our scores while listening to the parts on the CD. We also distributed 40 copies of the Galindo MP3 burned onto CDs for people to use for practice.

Wed. September 21, 2005 Rehearsal

We started with the Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the Faure. From about 8:30 on, we read through the Galindo for the first time, with extensive notes as to who sings what parts. There are spoken sections in addition to the part splits. Talk to Lynne Morrow to see whether you're in the speaking group.

A full read-through of the Borodin, still without lyrics, then a few selected movements of the Faure. Lynne suggested that people will want to do more warm-ups on their own before rehearsal, because we won't use as much rehearsal time for them.
